Hybrid Vehicles Help GM Improve Fuel Efficiency, Reduce Emissions

Producing hybrid vehicles is one piece of GM's strategy to improve fuel efficiency and reduce vehicle emissions, along with improving the efficiency of the traditional internal combustion engine and developing hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. GM is applying hybrid technology to high-volume and high-fuel-consuming vehicles first to save as many gallons of fuel as possible.

A 300-volt battery pack is larger than a typical battery, but fits in without compromising passenger space. No plug-in is required.

VUE, AURA and Malibu

Very affordable hybrid-powered powertrains are offered in the Saturn VUE Green Line, Saturn AURA Green Line and Malibu Hybrid.

These vehicles use GM's hybrid system to reduce fuel consumption. The Ecotec 4-cylinder engine works with the sophisticated electric motor/generator to shut off the engine at stops, restart the engine when the brake pedal is released, charge the advanced nickel metal hydride battery through regenerative braking, and perform intelligent battery charging when it is most efficient.

Tahoe and Yukon

Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon Hybrid models use a two-mode patented full hybrid technology optimized for both city and highway driving.

At low speed and light loads, the first mode operates by electric power or engine power or any combination. Electric power only provides the most fuel savings.

The second mode is primarily for highway speeds providing electric assist and full V8 power when needed. It integrates sophisticated electronic controls, Active Fuel ManagementT11 , cam phasing and late-intake valve closure for efficient engine operation.
